SEC says meme coins are not securities
The SEC has issued guidance stating that most memecoins are not considered securities under US federal law, meaning purchasers are not protected by securities laws and those offering/selling memecoins do not need to register transactions. This guidance contrasts with the SEC’s stance under former chairman Gary Gensler, who advocated treating crypto tokens, including memecoins, as securities. Additionally, the SEC dismissed its lawsuit against Coinbase and Chairman Uyeda stated that the Commission should develop crypto policy in a more transparent manner. All of this happened roughly a month into U.S. President Donald Trump’s second term, in which Trump issued an executive order to create the Department of Government Efficiency, led by Elon Musk, an independent government advisory agency that’s named after the memecoin, Dogecoin. Trump also launched a memecoin for his supporters called $TRUMP, just days before his inauguration.

MicroStrategy borrowed $8.2 billion to acquire 499,096 Bitcoin and its business model relies on borrowing money, buying Bitcoin, driving the price higher, selling new shares, and buying more Bitcoin. However, this flywheel effect only works in one direction. The company’s debt includes a “fundamental change” clause that could force early redemption if shareholders approve liquidation. If Bitcoin’s value falls significantly, MicroStrategy’s assets could slip below its liabilities, creating an incentive for shareholders to liquidate.

Voyager‘s First Riff on the Star Trek Trial Episode Is a Weird Experiment
As Star Trek: Voyager marks its 30th anniversary, revisiting its first season reveals mixed results. The episode “Ex Post Facto,” focuses on Tom Paris, accused of murder and forced to relive his victim’s memories. Tuvok investigates to prove Tom’s innocence. While drawing on tropes from previous trial-themed episodes like “A Matter of Perspective” and “Dax”, “Ex Post Facto” is less compelling. Despite Tuvok’s interesting investigative role, the episode doesn’t quite capture the intrigue of its predecessors, highlighting early Voyager’s focus on Tom as a central character.

OpenAI Is Leaning on Paid Users to Test ChatGPT-4.5
OpenAI has launched its GPT-4.5 model, but using it requires a $200 per month ChatGPT Pro subscription, as it is still technically in a “research preview” state. GPT-4.5 provides more “natural conversation” and performs better when it comes to programming, pattern recognition, writing, and “solving practical problems.” It hallucinates less frequently and is more accurate than GPT-4.0. GPT-4.5 is set to expand to all paid ChatGPT plans over the next two weeks, before presumably reaching free users as a replacement for GPT-4.0 once it leaves its preview state. The major omissions seem to be multimodal features like AIVoice Mode and video input.

Your App Is Dying Under Heavy Traffic—Here’s How Big Tech Stops the Meltdown
The article explores advanced loadshedding techniques to manage overload in distributed systems, drawing from 14 years of experience at Amazon and AWS Lambda. Overload occurs when a system receives more work than it can efficiently process, leading to increased latency and eventual system failure. Loadshedding involves intentionally rejecting excess requests. Key concepts include Amdahl’s Law, Universal Scalability Law, and Little’s Law. Little’s Law is a relationship between the average number of items in a queuing system (L), the average arrival rate of items (λ), and the average time an item spends in the system (W). The article highlights the importance of these concepts in maintaining and designing high-throughput systems.

I Spent Years Freelancing in Web Dev—Here’s the Modular Trick That Saved My Sanity
Modular architecture provides a way to reuse logic across multiple projects. In React, components are organized into folders with their styles, using CSS modules. The module structure includes folders for components, pages, and modules. Each module contains files for the component, styles, index, slice (using redux-toolkit for data management), types, and API calls. Keeping modules simple and dividing large modules into smaller pieces is essential. Pages serve as entry points for each application and can contain different modules.

If a Task Does Not Directly Contribute to the Company’s Goals, It’s Wasted Effort
While Scrum can be structured, it risks treating developers as execution machines. To lead technical teams effectively, product managers need a human-centered approach that addresses Scrum’s shortcomings. The two-week sprint cycle, designed for rapid progress, can feel relentless and limit creative thinking. Instead of extending sprints, breaking tasks into smaller, manageable pieces is key. Self-imposed deadlines, where engineers estimate the time needed for a task, can be useful for accountability and refining estimation skills, but PMs need to be careful in imposing these deadlines.

Del Valle attended the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) and observed the sentiment towards Musk, his “Department of Government Efficiency,” and the regulation of big tech. The discussion covers Musk’s appearance at CPAC, where he wielded a chainsaw, and explores how the MAGA base feels about his closeness to Trump. Additionally, they consider whether the administration will be more lenient on tech companies now that some CEOs are aligned with them. The conversation also touches on the reactions to Musk’s policies and influence within government, as well as broader themes of populism and federal technology staffing.

Solid-state drives (SSDs) are much faster than traditional hard drives, helping systems boot up in seconds and load large files instantly. The most affordable way to add fast storage space to a computer is with a 2.5-inch SATA drive. M.2 drives can feature either a SATA or NVMe interface, and the key difference between them is that SATA M.2 drives have the same 600MB/s bandwidth limit as their 2.5-inch counterparts.

The New York City Subway Is Using Google Pixels to Listen for Track Defects
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and Google conducted an experiment using Google Pixel smartphones to monitor New York City’s subway tracks. Six phones were placed on subway cars to collect data via their sensors, including accelerometers, magnetometers, gyroscopes, and external microphones. This data was used to train AI prediction models to identify track defects. The technology, called Track Inspect, was able to identify 92% of the defect locations later found by human inspectors. The goal is to minimize the amount of work required to identify defects, allowing inspectors to focus on repairs, potentially saving time and resources.
