ElevenLabs' Audiobook Publishing Platform
ElevenLabs, a VoiceAI company, has launched its audiobook publishing program, allowing authors to create and publish AI-generated audiobooks on its Reader app. This follows their recent partnership with Spotify for AI-narrated audiobooks. The platform aims to provide affordable tools for audiobook creation, competing with Audible by offering faster royalty rates. Authors are paid approximately $1.10 when listeners engage with an audiobook for 11 minutes or more, and the company plans to create a marketplace for authors to sell their content.

ElevenLabs now lets authors create and publish audiobooks on its own platform
VoiceAI company ElevenLabs is now letting authors publish AI-generated audiobooks on its own Reader app. The announcement comes days after the company partnered with Spotify for AI-narrated audiobooks. ElevenLabs started inviting authors to try out their publishing program through their app on a trial basis last year, that program is newly open to all authors as of today. The idea is to provide affordable and accessible tools for audiobook creation, which might have otherwise cost much more to produce in a studio. The platform itself aims to compete with Audible, which ElevenLabs believes offers slower royalty rates for authors. ElevenLabs’ audiobooks will be offered within its own Reader app and the company will pay authors when users engage with their content, currently, it pays roughly $1.10 to authors when listeners engage with an audiobook for 11 minutes or more. The company also plans to create a marketplace where authors can sell their content.

Google just made AI coding assistance free for everyone – with very generous limits
Google has announced Gemini Code Assist, a free AI coding assistant for individuals. As generative AI tools like ChatGPT were first released, many coders were amazed that the AIs could help us code. Over time, as we integrated AI into our coding workflow, it became apparent that constantly copying and pasting code snippets into various browser tabs was not only annoying but inefficient. So AI vendors started to integrate AI functionality right into the development environments coders use every day. You could highlight a block of code and the AI could read it, respond to it, and possibly update it. Assuming the AI didn’t screw up, the process could be a big time-saver.

AI Model Training and Efficiency
Nvidia A100 GPUs were used to train multiple AI models of varying sizes, utilizing code data with a context size of 2048. The models were trained with variations in attention mechanisms: multihead, multigroup, and multiquery. A multigroup model variant for 672m and 2.8b models decreased the fanout in the feedforward layer. Context-aware bifurcated attention can be implemented without performance trade-offs. Multi-query attention is beneficial for single-batch inference with long contexts and high numbers of generated tokens.
AI Applications and Impact
Reduced latency from efficient AI models can significantly improve applications like AI-assisted code generation and machine translation services. Efficient computation leads to faster and more scalable translation services, especially when generating translations with varying degrees of formality or for different dialects.

Why Memory I/O Efficiency Matters for AI Model Performance
The observed latency reduction can have a profound impact on applications such as code generation where AI-assisted code generation can benefit greatly from reduced latency, especially when generating multiple code snippets or suggestions for a given context, leading to a more responsive and efficient user experience. Also, in situations where multiple translations are needed for a single input, such as generating translations with varying degrees of formality or generating translations for different dialects, the context-aware bifurcated attention can provide more efficient computation, resulting in faster and more scalable machine translation services.

FAQs: How Bifurcated Attention Improves AI Model Efficiency
Context-aware bifurcated attention offers a way to perform attention without a performance tradeoff and can be used without performance trade-offs. Multi-query is applicable for single-batch inference without high batch sampling if the context is long and the number of generated tokens is high, then the benefit of multi-query is clear. If processing different inputs in a batch, multi-query attention can reduce memory during incremental decoding, especially in scenarios with a high number of generated tokens.

The Rise of Opaque Productivity Algorithms
An MIT Technology Review article highlights the increasing use of opaque algorithms in workplaces to analyze worker productivity. Companies are adopting software to monitor keystrokes and computer usage, driven by suspicions about remote worker productivity. This trend impacts remote workers, gig workers, and those in industries where algorithmic decision-making dictates work pace and conditions. These tools are often perceived as control mechanisms rather than efficiency enhancers, diminishing worker power. Labor groups advocate for transparency in algorithms driving management decisions as efficiency gains influence both private and public sectors.

How AI is used to surveil workers
A recent MIT Technology Review article details the rapid spread of opaque algorithms designed to analyze worker productivity in various workplaces. Companies are increasingly adopting software to monitor keystrokes and computer usage, driven by the suspicion that remote workers are less productive, a notion not broadly supported by research. This trend extends beyond remote work, impacting gig workers and those in industries where algorithmic decision-making dictates work pace and conditions, sometimes leading to injuries. The article suggests these tools are more about control than efficiency, reducing workers’ power. Labor groups are advocating for transparency in the algorithms that drive management decisions, as the pursuit of efficiency gains political influence and extends from the private to the public sector.
