Accessibility and Capabilities of AI Chatbots

AI chatbot technology is becoming more accessible to the general public through platforms like Microsoft's Copilot, Google's Gemini, and OpenAI's GPT-4o. These programs use vast autocomplete systems trained to predict the next word in a sentence, lacking a hard-coded database of facts, which can lead to the presentation of false information as truth. Recent developments include Grok resetting the AI race, Rabbit showcasing its AI agent, and Meta's subsea cable for AI.

AI Integration in Various Platforms

Google Meet's AI transcripts will automatically create action items, while Amazon is revamping Alexa. Also, ChatGPT drops its sign-in requirement for search, and Gemini AI can automatically turn your spreadsheets into charts.

Report: AI coding assistants aren’t a panacea

A new report by GitClear analyzing 211 million code lines from 2020 to 2024 suggests that while AI coding assistants like GitHub Copilot are gaining popularity, they may be causing an overall decline in code quality. The analysis revealed a notable decrease in code reuse last year, which is concerning because code reuse is a common practice for building redundant systems. Surveys also indicate that developers spend more time debugging AI-generated code and security vulnerabilities compared to human-written code. While AI can speed up code reviews and documentation, it may come at the expense of delivery stability.

Apple pulls encryption feature from UK over government spying demands

Apple has stopped offering its end-to-end encrypted iCloud storage, Advanced Data Protection (ADP), to new users in the UK. Existing users will eventually need to disable the feature. This decision follows reports that UK security services requested backdoor access to worldwide users’ encrypted backups. Apple expressed disappointment, citing rising data breaches and threats to customer privacy. ADP protects iCloud data with end-to-end encryption, accessible only by the account owner on their devices. Removing ADP means British users’ files will be accessible to Apple and shareable with law enforcement with a warrant. Apple states it has never built a backdoor and remains committed to user security.
